The Biggest Instagram Updates in 2026 Everyone Should Know About

With over 3 billion monthly active users, Instagram remains one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. However, competition remains stiff, so the platform must continue to grow, improve, and innovate to stay relevant.

In just the first six months of 2026, Instagram has rolled out a slew of new updates, from a BeReal clone to a paid tier to a much-requested user feature.

Instagram Introduces Instants

BeReal, a social media platform that encourages users to “share one genuine moment per day,” rose to prominence in 2023 but began fading by 2025. Instagram clearly noticed this drop and swiftly took action to deliver its very own clone. By May 2026, Instagram introduced Instants, which the company described as “a new way to share in the moment – with spontaneous, unfiltered photos– with friends.” Launched as a new feature within Instagram and as a separate app, Instants was clearly built to fill the gap BeReal created (and Snapchat pioneered). It’s hard to say how much staying power Instants will have, but a month in, it’s obvious that it’s already fallen in daily use, based on our own observations.

Instagram Goes Paid

After successfully testing and launching Meta Verified in 2023, Meta launched a paid premium tier for its three core apps, including Instagram, in May 2026. Starting at $4 a month per subscription, the premium tier added 11 additional features and perks to the app, including story spotlight, super hearts, improved story rewatch insights, a custom app icon and bio font, and more. Given how much companies are investing in AI to beat Google, it makes sense that the company might want to create a new revenue stream. However, it’s too early to tell if many Instagrammers will make the move to premium even if the new features are deemed “useful” by everyday users.

Instagram Finally Lets Users Reorder the Grid

If you asked a random group of Instagram users what their most requested feature is, they would likely say the ability to reorder their feed. Well, Instagram finally listened in June 2026 with a surprise announcement that mainstream media even took notice. Since the platform’s genesis, users’ posts have always been shown on their profile page chronologically (newest at the top, oldest at the bottom), with a slight update in 2022 that allowed three pinned posts. With this new grid reordering feature, Instagram is now giving users more customization, control, and flexibility without charging a fee. According to Meta, this change allows users to “group together content series, multi-part stories, tutorials, transformations, or ‘Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3’ posts so audiences can more easily follow your narrative.”

Millennials, Gen Z, and now Gen Alpha make up the majority of today’s Instagram users. To remain dominant, relevant, and seen as a top competitor, the platform will need to evolve and grow with the times, ensuring it caters to its demographic without pushing them away. What key feature do you want Instagram to add next in 2026?
