Creating and maintaining meaningful relationships with journalists is a vital component of being a public relations professional. This is especially true if you’re working with media outlets you frequently pitch, such as those covering a specific beat or trade journalists.
While creating these relationships may be fairly straightforward to most PR pros, continuing to grow and nurture these relationships often gets overlooked. A PR professional should never see their work with a journalist as a one-hit wonder.
From our experience, here are some strategies to create and maintain these valuable connections.
Do Your Research
Reaching out to the right journalist is not only crucial to securing your client coverage, but it’s the first step to creating these meaningful relationships. Most journalists get anywhere from two dozen to two hundred pitches per day, so instead of blasting your pitch out to the entire editorial team, take the extra few minutes to identify those who would actually be interested in the story.
This also allows you to craft personalized, concise pitches that align with their beat. Thorough research and personalizing outreach demonstrate professionalism, respect, and a commitment to meaningful communication. It can also increase the likelihood of your story being covered and help build long-term, beneficial relationships.
Provide Value
When pitching a journalist, ensure that your communication provides value. Instead of bombarding them with generic press releases, tailor your message to their specific interests and beats.
Whether you’re offering exclusive insights, data, or expert opinions that can enhance their stories, consistently providing valuable content can help you become a reliable source and, as a result, make journalists more likely to turn to you when they need information.
Maintain Consistent Communication
Consistency is key to maintaining relationships. Even when you don’t have a story to pitch, send them interesting industry news, congratulate them on their recent work, or invite them to relevant events. Regular, meaningful communication helps keep you on their radar and reinforces the relationship.
Show Appreciation
A simple thank you can go a long way. If a journalist covers your story, express your gratitude. Share the article on your social media platforms and give them credit. Better yet, if your client is open to sharing on their platforms, have them do it, too! Acknowledging their work not only shows appreciation but also helps build a positive and respectful relationship.
Support Journalists
Does a journalist you work with often have a call out for a specific source, and although your clients don’t fit the bill, do you know of a brand or another PR pro who could be a fit for what they’re looking for? Then, connect them! Sharing resources goes a long way and is a great way to support journalists.
